Online Reputation Management with SEO

The fact that anyone can post anything online is a mixed blessing. Many companies have found, much to their horror, that others have posted half-truths or outright lies about them. What can you do if this happens to you or your company? This is where online reputation management comes in.

What is Online Reputation Management?

It is rare that a successful long standing company does not at some stage have some kind of negative feedback from a competitor who is jealous, a dissatisfied client, a prima-donna who wants to look special or just someone who simply wants to rock the boat. Of course the vast majority of website owners do not have a problem with their reputation.

However, with more and more user- generated content media and social media opportunities, there is the danger that negative comments/posts can find themselves in the top 10 of Google, or even worse, above-the-fold on a search for your company name, individual name, brand/product name or main keywords.

I am a great believer in free speech. However, free speech has its drawbacks. Sometimes negative feedback can get written with little justification or evidence provided. This can be disastrous PR wise, especially for strong brands.

Sometimes, however, negative comments are justified. In this case, a marketing manager will still want the "negative" page on the second page of Google results. It is a bit of a problem for SEO companies to offer this service, as they could be seen as manipulating Google to the detriment of users if there is a real basis for negative comments, and could themselves face a problem with their reputation. "ABAKUS helping the XYZ cowboys to gain reputation!". This article, however, assumes that the reputation management is justified.

Online Reputation Management Checklist

  1. Identification of Keywords/Keyword phrases

Often a company will check just their company name, brand name, product name and individual names. These are of course important, as they refer specifically to a company. However, you should also check other potential relevant keywords. It may not be just your company name that reveals a top 10 negative listing but also one of your main keyword phrases.

Tip: Having checked the main reputation keywords such as company name, brand etc., look at the title tag of the negative page(s) to see if they contain other search terms that are relevant for your site and check if they are also found in the top 10 of Google. Don't think automatically that it's just your company/brand/product/individual keywords that are affected.

  1. First Contact with Domain Owner

It seems obvious, but in the heat of a panic you may well forget to simply ask the owner of the site with the negative comment (particularly if it's a blog/forum comment) to remove it. That does not mean in the first instance you should start with threatening language such as cease and desist letters etc. Website owners often don't even know that user-generated content on their website includes any negative comments.

Use a bit of psychology; tell them that you are impressed with their site, tell them how surprised you were that such unfounded false and unjustified comments were allowed on the site. Ask them if they would kindly remove the post/comment as it is not based on truth or fact and is damaging to your good reputation… if you have evidence, be sure to provide it.

Do not go in all gung-ho with threats of any kind. Be nice!

  1. Second contact with Domain Owner

If the owner does not respond or refuses to remove the negative comment/post, then express your disappointment and mention that due to the PR damage the post is causing, you will be contacting your lawyer for advice, as you feel it is defamation/libel and request again to have it removed within a time scale of, say, five days. Still do not use aggressive or threatening language at this stage.

  1. Third Contact with Domain Owner

If you still get no response, seek legal advice. It may well be against the law (defamation/slander) and not just a case of free speech, especially if the owner of the site is in any way a competitor or in your field. Sometimes a letter or phone call from a lawyer will sort things out quickly. Many are reluctant to do this, as they fear the costs and time involved of bringing in a lawyer. However, the costs of pushing a negative comment/post on to a second page of Google are usually very much higher than the hiring of a good Internet lawyer.

Do not (as two competitors have disastrously done in the past) make your first step a letter or call from a lawyer, or in one case, send without any prior warning or contact, a legal cease-and-desist letter. This can backfire disastrously should it be known in the community that legal pressure is being applied to "stifle free speech" and end up blogged and posted everywhere.

What if Removing the Post is Not an Option?

  1. Removal of page with comment/post not an option

In some cases there is simply no possible way to persuade a website owner to remove a negative comment/post. In this case you need to push the page with the negative comments on to the second results page of Google. How do you do this? Well, there are many ways to do it. These can be basically categorized into five areas…

  1. Bump up existing pages that have positive or neutral comments.

  2. Create new content for syndication through articles, a new blog etc.

  3. Add new sub-domains, new sister domains, other tlds (preferably other IP c-blocks) (.at, .ch) .

  4. Add content to external strong authority/trusted domains and use social media avenues.

  5. Reducing authority/trust on offending pages.

Let's take a look at them in detail, starting with bumping up existing pages with positive or neutral comments.

  1. Bump up existing pages with positive or neutral comments

Not all the results in the top 20 will be negative. If, for example, the negative comment for, say, your company name is currently ranking fourth on Google, you need basically 7 pages of positive or neutral content ranking above it to push it onto the second page.

Take a look at the Google results immediately below the negative page to start with, and then work your way down. You will most likely have no direct influence on these pages, but what you can do is push them up indirectly through link building and promoting them through social media bookmarking. You may be able to help the relevance/ranking by adding a further comment if possible on the positive/neutral page with, say, a link to other positive reviews or your home page to increase relevancy. Mostly, however you need to look at pushing these pages through links.

Why not from your own page? eg. "what others have said about us…", "Other feedback on xyz gmbh."

Persuade anyone you know (happy clients, business partners, resellers, friends pages etc.,) particularly those with a strong authority/trusted domain, to link to the positive/neutral page(s) with the targeted keyword. Of course not all will, but there is no harm in asking. Do not just go for one or just two types of pages to push. Basically Google likes diversity of content by search terms, so do not just push press releases or just forums. Mix it up so you have blogs/forums/press releases/existing sub-domains etc.

  1. Create new content through articles, new blog etc.

First of all, check your "about us" / „contact" / „our team" pages. Make sure you optimize them by adding -- say if the company name is a problem – the company name at the front of the title tag. This could mean you don't get just the one entry but two entries in Google for your company name. This in itself pushes the offending page down one place.

You could also add new features, such as your own forum/blog, ensuring the keywords are in the title tag. Write articles that could be seen as controversial or are in some way oriented towards linkbaiting (fun, controversial, very useful). This has the effect of not only boosting your own authority through external links if that is a problem, but it may well be syndicated on large websites (promote it as such) and therefore could result in a strong website taking up the article.

Tip: If you already have two results in Google, then do not let this article page be indexed by Google; otherwise, there may be a duplicate content issue if a large website takes up the article. Obviously, in the articles you use a title/headline that includes the offending keywords.

  1. Add new sub-domains, new sister domains (.co.uk, .info)

Very effective is the use of sub-domains. Google sees them as separate sites, but they do still carry the authority and trust of the root domain. Eg. "ABAKUS Internet Marketing" in Google.de lists, in the first place, my forum (because it's the page most linked to); in the second place my actual home page; but in the third and forth places are my sub-domain semseo.abakus-internet-marketing.de for my SEMSEO conference.

You do have to be sure when you create a sub-domain that you do not just copy content from your main domain, and that it does have useful, unique content. It doesn't need 100 pages in it. Ten or so pages per sub-domain is also fine. Do not overdo it. Maybe create two to three sub-domains.

Sub-domains aren't the only answer. Maybe you already have other existing domains. Be sure the existing "sister" domains are well-optimized and well-linked externally. If you don't have any other domains, then you can create new domains, ensuring the keyword you want to cover is in the domain name.

One company well known to those in my field (for the wrong reasons) has, in a vain attempt to keep negative comments out of the top 10, created so many different domains that I can't count them all. Many are n the format of xxxxxx-<city>.de etc. -- with some success, I might add. Five of the separate "sister" domains are in the top 10 (unfortunately for them, most are below the negative feedback).

If you are going to create new domains, do not expect instant success. These domains will need their own link juice and will tend to take a few months to even show up in the top 15. You will also need content for these pages, which should be different from what you already have (duplicate issues).

You may even consider going multi-lingual or at least covering .co.uk and .info. These will be viewed as separate domains, and although the tld isn't .com, they can also rank well in a google.com search.

Don't forget for sub-domains and for new domains you will need to make sure they are well linked to -- and not just from your own existing websites.

  1. Add content to external strong authority domains and use social media avenues.

A really effective way of pushing negative pages down is to identify strong authority/trusted domains that allow user-generated content or entries through payment.

For example, a search for my full name, "Alan Webb," lists in the top 10 one result from my Xing profile and two results from Twitter (twitter.com); there is also a sevenload result (someone recorded me at my pub conference doing karaoke).

Another example of the effectiveness of using other strong domains can be seen through the results when typing in my company name, "Abakus Internet Marketing." The first page includes results from interworld.de, marketing-boerse.de, openpr.de and interestingly a mister-wong bookmark page. All of those domains are fairly strong authorities and are trusted.

If you do not have a Twitter account, get one, and use the keyword in the user name. Twitter, by the way is very effective indirectly for SEO, but not in the sense of direct linkage; that article is perhaps for another day.

Consider MySpace and Facebook or other social bookmarking network entries. And of course, create interesting press releases, ensuring your keywords are in the heading, and make sure you get a professional PR company to distribute the press release to as many press portals as possible. Last but not least, don't forget to also link to these "piggy back" pages from your own and external websites.

  1. Reducing authority on negative pages.

This is a tricky one. Often the reason a page ranks well has a lot to do with how and from whom it is linked. Therefore, check to see who is linking to the negative comment/post page. A good way to do this is through Yahoo! Type in the search mask for Yahoo the following…

link:http://www.negativedomain.de/negativepage.htm -site:negativedomain.de

This will provide you a list of all pages that link to the negative page externally. Obviously, change the domain name and page name to the one relevant for you.

Once you have identified who links to this page (sometimes there are no links, so you can skip this bit), see if there is anyone listed who you know, or who would be sympathetic with you, and request they remove the link, or at least change the link text if it includes your keyword. Again, be polite and do not threaten.

There may well be a legal way to force them to remove your company name from the link. I am not sure, but I believe you can enforce improper use of your brand/copyright name. There are other ways to reduce the trust and authority of a domain, but these involve so-called "black hat" techniques which, if found out, could backfire in a horrendous way. If the domain is established and an authority, many black hat techniques wouldn't work anyway.

Monitoring

A company's PR department/marketing department or agency should be monitoring company/brand/product/individual keys at all times. If not, consider setting up a "Google Alert" for your keywords (it's free). There are probably thousands of major companies out there who don't even realize they have a problem, as they simply don't bother to Google themselves.

Even when you have succeeded in pushing a negative comment to page two, you should be very vigilant. For example, the poster of the negative comment gets annoyed that his/her comment is now on page two, so tries to find a page that is now top 10 where he/she can add a new negative comment. That's why it can be dangerous to push content up that is still open for comments. Also, be vigilant when you send out press releases that enable comment features.

Rebuttal Comments

You can of course decide to post a rebuttal to negative comments. Often, however, this can involve a long flaming discussion, particularly in forums, which can often end up making things worse.

The general advice is not to offer a rebuttal comment unless you can provide hard evidence, directly in your comment, that what is said is not true or unfair. Also ask the website owner if he will allow outbound links (no rel=nofollow) to positive comments on other pages (that you have yourself pushed as above) in order to achieve a fair balance in the comments.

Summary

As you can see, it isn't all that straightforward and simple. It takes time, resources and money. Consider if it is really worth the time money and effort.

You should at least take the first contact steps listed above. For some companies, especially strong, well-known brands, good rankings for negative comments highly visible in the Google results page can be disastrous.

Corporate communication and PR managers have neglected online reputation management for years. Usually, the thinking is that there is nothing that can be done, and the approach is to just hope they will go away. There is a lot you can do, but as with most things in life, it takes work and money.

Four strokes to promote your site

In this flow is king of the cyber world, the traffic is a fundamental survival owners, but how the flow kind of websites do together? This is also the most troublesome issues a lot of owners, we all know that the best thing is to rely on search results engine, according to previous recent survey shows that the number of Internet users in China reached 338 million, most of which Web sites are found through the search engines!

So how can make your own website up in search engine rankings? How to make a fast search engine to crawl the site page? To achieve the above this, we have to first understand: the decision included with the top search engines What are the factors and found the factors are able to prescribe the right medicine. Personal summed up the four main factors:

First, your site's structure

Constantly looking for user-friendly to read and spiders crawling the site structure is to ensure speed and good search engine rankings included base. Site structure, mainly from the overall planning of a suitable search engine included the contents of the structure, such as: do not be too deep to do the directory section and so on, search engines that: the weight of two domain names, "two directory" root directory of the document. When naming files and directories, with better spelling. In addition: production of html and xml site map for spiders crawling faster so that search engines can be included.

Second, the content of the site

Web site content and make the most appropriate keywords corresponding to the integration, which contains articles to the website to add the appropriate titles, labels, article content, image Alt tags. Ranking in Baidu, the title keywords, keyword density article in possession of a relatively high weight. The title and keywords can appear two times, not too much, the article appears in the keyword density of 2% -8% for the right. In addition: the picture by adding an appropriate description of image alt tags is to optimize the site, one of the basic quality of personnel.

3, keyword

Link text keywords. It is also crucial, but we usually ignore this one, the establishment of external links, or internal links, in the link by adding keywords.

4, external links

External links are very important to be careful not to link to bad sites, outside the chain include: paid and free directory submission of websites to exchange links, paid links, and link bait and so on. Link is also a measure of one of the factors pr. Established outside the chain should be the most difficult seo is very effective!

Link to enhancing the value of PR

(1) First locate their own websites, to find himself or herself, to do the same type of station links, the saying goes people into groups, but also reflect the professionalism of your site are conducive to search engine included.

(2) to determine the target immediately after the first, not in a hurry to talk about with each other, to check each other's outer chain and Baidu, and a snapshot of the situation included! Owners tools to use to check each other's outside the chain of the number of Baidu's recent snapshot of time, to determine K had previously whether they have been, PR value is not a fake! If your friendship links are Baidu down the right, then your site may be implicated. Therefore, we in the exchange of Link, when Kanxia just need to get your website in Baidu and, if the volume contains only one, then most likely drop the right. In addition, Kanxia home in Baidu snapshot date, if the snapshot date of more than one week or even longer, then this site may be down right Baidu.

(3) to exchange links should pay attention to quality. A good PR value is related to the weight of a station, it relates to the link quality, which is why we were going to do a good station link. Link is not possible, to be precise. For the other stations, even if the PR value is high, but the connection a lot (for example, more than 50), was also not very meaningful, and the average value of each station would be almost no PR, the other side of the link little as possible.

4, Link categories

Everything is ready, have confirmed that inspection is completed, and then have to consider what to do Link.

The most common is the home exchange is a direct connection.

Another is the cross-connect with our station's home page to inside pages of the other chains, the other station's home page links to our inside pages of this website for other pages to improve their own weight is very helpful!

Therefore, in exchange for a Link, when a lot of work needs to be done, and needs a lot of search engine queries included the number of the other side and reverse links, need to check the other site's pr, need to check the other site's home page Baidu Snapshot date and whether it is cheating, have been K-off site.

First, the use of its connections, so that a friend's website to be a text link. At this time is to reflect the value of a friend, and true friends leave friends at this time clearly exposed out. Key words ranking fight for is a resource, relationships, or through a variety of ways you can find a relatively high weight to your web site a new station to do links, this time a network of contacts becomes very important. Owners are more like friends, let a friend to help hang a text link, so the results are good. Jiangsu Province is one such design and digital resource network links become friends again. Suggest that you go to chinaz exchange station owners such as the shops owners to pay more friends, there are powerful people can do a few stations, with each other to do links.

Second, the mutual exchange of friendship links. This is a better way, in order to meet their own needs, help each other.

Owners can go to the exchange of base station or to the owners go shopping, have a special area to exchange links. But the basic sites are of the same horizontal line with each other to do Link, while the new station and the PR value in order to do high-Link station, others do not agree, unless of RMB knock on the door. At this time more than if the connections are also a great advantage. Proposed that the new website's early days Do not worry, you can find a few forum owners were Baidu's new station included the exchange of Link.

Third, access to outside through the blog's friendship with connections to get, you can register a lot of articles and a blog to connect to your hair stand on their own there. This is a method, particularly for Sohu blog, and the News blog, as well as the most NB was Baidu blog. You can try to do so. Blog post where they were included in general as long as the weights are not low.

Fourth, the soft-wen. In fact, the effect of soft-wen is the best, that is, outside the chain can also increase the publicity site, but is not very good at writing for the owners who operate some of the personal difficulties, need to seriously look at the text organization, a good article in order to have a spread effect. Some owners have seen in a completely unrelated article by adding connections, there is no spread of this effect can only create your own blog published the results would be very general.

Fifth, to buy text link. The effect of this approach are obvious, but it is very easy, the only difficulty is to test how your wallet drum. Some owners are now specifically to make money by selling links. PR is not recommended to see better offer to buy, to see whether he sold a total number of connections, has sold 10 connections PR4 page, not as good as a selling 3 connections PR3 page, at the same time to look at his Web site update frequency, and content quality, independent a high PR page and do not update the results will be poor.

SEO optimization of the internal structure of Web site

Website optimization is a systematic project, not easy, and requires a lot of accumulation and attempts. The internal structure is a major part of the Website Optimizer, here summed up the main note, for your reference. The first is to optimize the site itself.

1, the website's internal link structure, as far as possible to change the original flash image links and links, the use of plain text links, and define the global position of a unified link.

2, the title title of the re-positioning, the title needs to contain optimized keyword content, while sites in the multiple page title can not be identical, at least to be able to display "keyword - Site Home - containing a simple keyword describe the "type. Once the title, do not do change!

3, each page containing keywords and to maintain a certain frequency: a simple restructuring of good content, immediately after log on to the search engines, hoping the new title as soon as possible and a new description included.

4, site structure, make minor changes: The following example of a specific web site to talk about the details of the structure adjustment. This step focused on the Web site's home page. Suppose that the image of the original website pages, use the more flash and images, these page elements is not conducive to search engine included, so the bottom of the page plus a three-column, respectively, is related to the company profile, keywords, product news and the company's product list of keywords and the contents of the three columns to add url.

Of course, the best way is to use the news system update keywords product news. We can do a link from a page to jump to a single page as a detailed description of keywords. This page contains a description of the company's product list Keywords link. These are the companies in order to form a network structure within the site.

5 resources should be used: talk about resource application. Adjustment of the site structure was generally good future, they can use some resources to extend the external link. Baidu is the first open space, space domain keywords on the use of the company's products, at the same time, former site of information reproduced, with the company Web site, so that Baidu robot the first time to visit the site. Among them were a technique: Use the space account to random access Baidu space for other users in order to obtain a return visit, so that spiders reach better results. Tip: Baidu space, paste made aware of the time bar and remember to link with information, to facilitate exchange of visits and improve traffic.

Optimizing Your Web Page Speed

Fast delivery is the key to success. Website speed optimization (load time) can help you increase conversion rates, win more customers and improve their satisfaction. Think of Google's approach to search and the milliseconds it takes to display results; it was one of many reasons people loved it when it first came out, though this speed is taken for granted today.

In this article you will learn how to minimize page load times by reducing HTTP requests, optimizing graphics, optimizing multimedia, converting tables to CSS, optimizing JavaScript and more.

Speed Optimizing Your Website

Start by stripping out all inline style and converting files into pure HTML code. Look at the pages and see if elements can be created more efficiently (usually tables can be converted to CSS). Once pages are stripped of all style, you can put those styles into an external CSS file.

  • Reduce the number of HTTP requests.

  • Put all visuals into an external style sheet and position it on top in the <head>.

  • Put all JavaScript in external files and position it at the bottom of the <head>. This will enable browsers to load content (HTML) and visuals (CSS) first, and then take care of javascript functionalities (which are not used until a page loads).

Switching to semantic mark-up also helps, but it's not a requirement. The basic idea is to strip pages down to their HTML structure, group content by div tags and target div tags with CSS IDs and Classes.

Optimize Images and Multimedia

Images are usually the largest files on a web page and take up most of the download time, hence image optimization is crucial.

First off, stay away from the following formats: TIFF and BMP. Use JPEG, GIFF and PNG instead. All three have good compression and are suited for various purposes.

(Photoshop is the standard in image editing, for web and other purposes)

  • Use JPEGs with photographs, product images and presentation images. Anywhere you need a high quality picture at the smallest possible size, JPEG is the best choice. You'll find little difference between high quality JPEG and medium quality, yet sizes can be up to three times smaller.

  • Use GIFF compression for icons, backgrounds and small graphics.

  • Use PNG for high quality screen shots, transparent graphics and icons.

Here are some more image optimization tips:

  • Resize image to the exact dimension that you want to use on the web page. Extra size adds weight and download time.

  • Use CSS backgrounds and borders instead of images.

  • Minimize bit depth in GIFs and PNGs.

  • Adjust layers in Photoshop to minimize the width of the drop shadow for better compression.

Videos

Video optimization is only useful if you're hosting videos on the server, and if you are, I must ask a question: why? It eats too much bandwidth and requires manual optimization of files, taking extra time. Unless you absolutely must host video, use the following websites. They will compress your videos to the smallest possible size, while maintaining a good level of quality.

Flash

A basic Flash mistake is lack of image optimization. Use Photoshop for optimization instead of Flash. You might not notice the difference at first, but as you do it to hundreds of images, you will feel the overall weight reduction as it adds up.

Avoid Flash optimizers, free or not. They degrade quality too much. Real optimization is manual.

Convert Table Layout to CSS Layout

Using CSS can save you up to 50 percent of web page markup.

First see if you can achieve table layouts with DIV tags, and then strip down the content of tables and build it back using CSS. You can use CSS to position an entire page layout just as successfully as with tables.

Put Important Content Up Front

You can decrease the perceived load time of your web pages by loading something useful first. For example, if visitors go to your site for content, then load content first and everything else second. If users come for a web application, then load that application first.

You can achieve this by layering your DIVs.

External JavaScript Embeds

Web outsourcing is as popular as job outsourcing to China, India and other countries with cheap labor. Webmasters can outsource video, slide show presentations, images, advertisements, music playlists and more. The problem with outsourcing and widgets is they can delay your page load time, and there's nothing you can do to optimize it.

Though Google maintains huge server farms to streamline download time, other third party providers do not have this luxury, so watch who you embed and always put external scripts on the bottom of the page, close to the </head> (if possible), as it ensures that external files will load last.

Semantic Markup

Semantic mark-up is not necessary to achieve high search engine rankings, but it can help with page load time, as browsers will render pages faster. If you plan your design from the beginning using a CSS layout, then use main DIVs such as #footer, #header, #content, #navigation, etc to declare style for ALL elements, without the need to embed classes in HTML.

  • Use CSS IDs for main elements that show once on the page (header, content, footer, etc).

  • Use classes for everything else.

Here are some more tips:

  • Make Ajax code cacheable to avoid HTTP requests.

  • Remove duplicate scripts from different pages and use an external script file sheet.

  • Avoid redirects, as they slow down load time and can lose link power from the previous domain.

  • Reduce domain name system lookups.

Minimize HTTP Requests

Each object on a web page requires a request to the server. If you have 20 images on the web page, then each image will require a separate request, totaling 20 altogether.

When the number of objects is high (10+), object requests dominate page download times. By minimizing the number of objects, you can minimize the number of HTTP requests, thus reducing page download time.

Follow those steps:

  • Convert graphic-based text to CSS. Graphic-based text in headers, and other page elements, requires the image file to be larger than it has to be (since too much compression reduces quality). Use CSS-style headers to achieve the same or a similar look. The trade off is one more HTTP request for a smaller image size and some CSS tweaking.

  • Combine external CSS and JavaScript files. Sometimes developers create style sheets and import them to the pages as required. This approach creates additional HTTP requests. By combining files, you will reduce download time by 1 HTTP request. You can also combine CSS and JavaScript files together by telling the server to parse CSS files for PHP commands. Search the web for more information.

  • Get rid of frames. Frames are extremely evil, since bots have trouble identifying web pages. They're just as evil as Flash in terms of SEO.

Convert JavaScript to CSS

JavaScript is used widely for a variety of purposes. The problem with JavaScript is that search engines do not read it (though technology already exists to even fill out JavaScript forms), and it requires a separate external file, which increases page download time.

Use CSS to perform commands similar to JavaScript: hover, dropdown, hide/show etc. You have to be pretty good with both languages, though, or instruct your  web person to do it.

After replacing JavaScript with as much CSS as possible, you can optimize the remaining code to minimize file size. There are a number of free tools on the web which will help reduce script file size by eliminating white space and using abbreviated object, variable and function names.

You can do the same with CSS:

You can also rewrite the same code to achieve a smaller file size, though this requires more time/money.

Measuring Page Load Time

Dreamweaver has a neat indicator on the bottom right hand corner which estimates page load time at different connection speeds and shows page file sizes (located near zoom, and screen resolutions). You can customize connection speed.

Also browse this Web Master World thread for more information on applications that measure the speed.

Make sure to test pages on different computers. I have a habit of checking our sites whenever I see a computer, whether at my friend's house, store or other company. You can check how fast your page loads, but also see how the website looks on a different monitor, at a different resolution, with a different graphics card.

Aim for page load times below three seconds. Anything larger can be felt by visitors, and there's nothing more annoying than waiting for a page to load. Keep in mind that Google spoiled the Internet population with an abundance of super relevant results and lightning fast load times. Users take this for granted and will not tolerate 10 seconds of wait time. They would rather go back and find someone who loads faster.

I hope this article helped. Leave us your comments, thoughts and additional tips on how to decrease page load time.

URL Keywords impact your site's ranking

A couple of days ago and a peer-seo discussion around three questions under the following url in the words of the strategy

1. Add keywords in url, OK?
2. Will the search engine read the keyword in url?
3. Url add keyword rank helpful improving?

First of all, let's see 2 big major search engines to presenting the attitude of the keyword in url

google:

Matt Cutts release one video among blog of him once, come, explain google the attitude of the keyword appeared to url specially. He say keyword of url very young to help that website rank, you needn't go, pay close attention to url order that the keyword appear, and, must not too many keywords appear in one url.

Yahoo:

Done a great deal in search, we are in the Yahoo March 26 this year to apply for the "Techniques for Tokenizing URLs" Yahoo has found relevant information.

This patent of Yahoo indicates, Yahoo will judge the content of a webpage from a lot of respects, certainly, the majority is to draw keywords from the page content, thus judge the webpage content. But Yahoo will come to judge the page content from url.

So,can getting clearer very think, add by keyword at url,for lasting website the ranks in Yahoo valid! After understanding search engine to the attitude of the keyword in url, we can have to new url optimizing us: Add the goal keyword in url appropriately, only use a keyword of one url, use and scribe between the keywords _ Or - separate.

Article SEO skill

In the last article, we had discussed the design philosophy that the article page was optimized. The design philosophy regarding the article page is optimized, think in hundred million Europe mainly to inspire everybody, can consult the forms of encyclopaedia websites. Because may optimize the way to our traditional website helpfully.

This article, what we talked about is not simple optimization skill. Some foundations regarding the label is optimized optimize the skill, there are many relevant study courses on the net. This article, think in hundred million Europe and want to tell everybody a thinking. It be able to be helpful to hope.

Traditional article page optimize, attention of everybody to stay in title, describe labels, key word label. In fact, these optimization way of foundation very, title and describe some label spend, the function of the key word label is basically and very small and very small.

And it is the following several points that the focal point regarding the article page is optimized needs paying close attention to:

1.Comprehension of the content

The more abundant, overall the content is, the greater the help of the rank to the webpage is. For example say, in an article content, all supplement in the close view contents of some relevant one, contacts. This is a very good expansion of content relevance, very helpful to authoritative cultivation of webpage.

2.Internal chaining

The function of internal chaining, there are much. Besides improving relevance, can also improve the transmission during website's internal weight, PR value page. The impact on rank is very great too, at least title function of the importance.

3.Form of the content

Publishing the contents of the layout, it is very important. Content to make full use of the headline <h1></h1> Title, the contents of the sub-title, to make full use of <h2></h2> Label. The contents of paragraphs, use <p></p> Label.

SEO optimizes-description to optimize

Make full use of Web page or channel page of description labels, the content of this page to provide an overview, in the form of <meta name="description" content="The content of this page outline" /> This will help users and search engines to enhance your understanding of web sites and pages.

Note: description: the translation into Chinese is "description" means, as its name suggests this is the site for you to do some general description of users and search engines to enhance your understanding of web sites and pages, but the procedure has always been the search engine, Baidu said the increase in search engine understand your site is almost negligible, in my view, this description is only a search engine in order to increase the keyword density.

Preceding we say to it acts as to be to let search engine find resource that user interested in reveal to users title, the emphasis point of title is not in ranking algorithms. Then what is the emphasis point which ranks the algorithm? The key word presents proportion in the page (density of the key word!) Should occupy a tiny space in ranking algorithms. Though one hundred degrees pile up one's own procedure and discern the method to key word, but the spider is that a machine is not the people, so judge to intelligence this is not absolutely correct. Thus " density of the key word " can not occupy too great proportion to rank algorithm, can only say that there are some less images to the rank. So description function on the search engine is not still far so great as description function on users to very strong website of professional lines of some contents.

Title and description of the set

Are talking about here refers to the secondary attraction has been ranked in the natural results of search engines was a good place to post how to

By setting the title and description (site description) to get more and more attractive in order to get more users to click on.

Baidu ranking in the auction also has the title and a brief site description and site ranking is a natural corresponding. Many enterprises pass

That should be the title of the site to determine how to describe it?

We choose to determine the title should stand the perspective of users and businesses to think about it.

First, the user what kind of user.

Second, business is what kind of business, what kind of products and services.

Mainly from the corporate brand, culture and business to consider all aspects of positioning. For example, this is a production-oriented enterprises

Own factories, does not have its own brand, the factory is the biggest advantage, it is necessary to highlight the advantages of enterprises. That title

In determining the advantage of customers and enterprises to focus on after the following description of the title can be

10 Reasons to Submit to YOUmoz

Have you been thinking about submitting to YOUmoz lately, but you're not sure what the benefits are? Or perhaps you have a killer post in your head but are afraid to take the next step. Whatever the reason is that you've been holding back, I have 10 reasons why you should get yourself in gear and get that post written and submitted!

Submit to YOUmoz

  1. Reach tens of thousands of SEOs
Our subscribers for both the main blog and YOUmoz continue to climb. Every month the numbers grow, just think about how many people will see your work. This is a great way to make yourself known in the industry.

    YOUmoz Subscribers

Feedburner stats for Blog and YOUmoz

  2. Get great feedback
People will leave comments and help/suggestions about your issue, or even ideas you hadn't considered before.

  3. Good posts get page views
If you write a successful post, it can generate lots of traffic. For example, the great post that Aaron Hunter wrote comparing Joomla and Wordpress is still getting over 1,000 page views a month and he wrote the post over a year ago.
    • 6,959 page views from January through July.
    • 11,468 page views since date of post (January 2008)

      SEOmoz site traffic

  4. Get smart SEOs visiting your links
SEOmoz visitors clickthrough rate is tremendously high compared to other blogs and sites in the field. When we link, people click, so if you want eyeballs, make something compelling. Check out how many members we have on our site, that's a lot of people looking at your work!

    Site Members

  5. Badge of Honor
Our bar is set high - just to make it to YOUmoz is tough; getting on the main blog is a real challenge. Our readers' expectations are high and we reject 10 submissions for every 1 we accept. It's a badge of honor and, in many cases, resume-worthy, particularly in the search world.

As an example, check out chenry's post on CAPTCHAs' Effect on Conversion Rates. It was so popular, it was moved to the main blog, and ended up with 58 thumbs up, 0 thumbs down (a feat I never manage myself!) and 73 total comments.

His entry isn't super long, but it is to the point, he shows graphics and pulls the reader into the post quickly.

  6. Get a job!
Yes, people come to SEOmoz looking for SEOs to hire (see the marketplace, for example). If you can show your knowledge through written word, you are likely to get some calls/emails.

  7. mozPoints
When you reach 100 mozPoints, the nofollow is removed from your profile and if you reach 150+ within one month you could get a free SEOmoz PRO membership for a month!

YOUmoz is the best way to earn those points because content gets more thumbs than comments (most of the time). Plus every time your YOUmoz entry gets posted on the site, you get 10 mozPoints, plus whatever thumbs up that post receives. AND if your post gets promoted to the main blog, you'll get an additional 15 mozPoints.

  8. Beat Rand!
Many of the best YOUmoz writers have authored posts with more thumbs than Rand's posts - just think how you can flaunt it in his sad, bearded face!

    Beat Rand

  9. Rank!
If you want to get top rankings in the engines with a piece of your content, but don't have the appropriate domain for it, SEOmoz has a lot of juice and ability to compete. While we don't allow parasite hosting, we do have YOUmoz :-)

    Rank well on SEOmoz

  10. Umm... you get a frickin' live link!
We have some serious sweet link juice floating around these pages, why not take advantage. All submissions are subject to our editorial approval of course (more on this below). :-)

Submit to YOUmoz

What we're looking for when reviewing YOUmoz entries

The fact is, if you submit a post that is clear, concise, well written and thought out, your entry will more than likely be approved. We are happy to post beginner articles along with more seasoned posts. Often times if a post is good, but needs some extra help to make it great, we'll work with you to get the post just right.

Use images!
Photos and images break up the content and help make it more readable. They give your post more "oomph" and can help you make your point more clear. Plus, great posts with graphics do really well.

For example, just look what feedthebot did back in 2007: How to put Google custom site search into your current website design. He wrote a post about integrating Google custom site search with your current web design and included some great visuals, which made the post engaging. As a result, since the post was published in May 2007, he has gotten over 38,486 page views.

Come up with some sort of unique and relevant image that goes with your post. If the post is short, then one image will do, but if it's a big longer, break it up with multiple images. Some examples:
  • Screenshots with areas highlighted
  • Charts or graphs
  • Illustrations
  • Photos
Here are a couple recent examples of good use of images/graphics in a post:

Example YOUmoz post with graphics Another example of using images in a post
Unique Content
We search for duplicate content and if we see the same post on another site, your entry will be automatically rejected. So it's more beneficial for you to only submit unique content.

Spell check and Grammar check
We read through every entry and will make changes as needed. However if the post is filled with misspellings and grammar changes that would take us a long time to fix, then your post probably won't get approved. Depending on how good it is we may send it back to you and ask you to redo it, but only if it's "knock your socks off" good.

When it comes down to it, have fun with your post and don't hold back. It's great to have posts that cover a mix of subjects, just keep them relevant. They don't have to be specifically about SEO, but the general topic of search marketing usually hits the mark! If you have questions feel free to email or send me a private message. I'm happy to help get your entry posted! And don't forget...

Increase Your AdSense Revenue Through Keyword Research

Any webmaster and blogger knows that significant Google AdSense revenue is very important to the life and profitability of blogs and websites. One of the biggest problems faced is lack of traffic, which leads to lack of clicks on Google AdSense banners...which leads to low AdSense income. Keep reading to find out how to prevent this problem.

Specifically, if we ask five "why" questions to determine the root cause of low Google AdSense income, this is what we find:

Why is the income from Google AdSense low?

Answer: It is because of insufficient clicks on Google ads or banners.

2. Why there is an insufficient number of clicks on Google ads or banners?

Answer: It is because of insufficient traffic coming from other domains.

3. Why is there insufficient traffic coming from other domains?

Answer: It is because the website is not marketed well.

4. Why the website is not marketed well?

Answer: It is because the webmaster does not have sufficient knowledge of website marketing techniques.

5. Why there is an insufficient knowledge of website marketing techniques?

Answer: They did not know how to select the keywords to target that they will be promoting in order to increase traffic for the website.

There you go; the root cause lies in keyword research. It is the heart of any search marketing campaign, including pay-per-click, search engine optimization, social bookmarking (which relies on tagging, which is keyword-based), video marketing (i.e. YouTube, which relies heavily on its own search engines to drive traffic), and lastly Google AdSense.

This article recommends a permanent corrective action that will educate webmasters or bloggers in how to select the best keywords to target in their blogs or websites; specifically, the ones that will increase or maximize Google AdSense income.

First: understand where your traffic comes from

By analogy, say you have a store and you need customers. Now to break down the first marketing problem, you need to ask this question: Where do my customers come from?

If you are selling online, a lot of visitors probably visit your website, but do know where they come from? Ever since Google AdSense came on the scene, a web site's success has been directly proportional to its traffic. Take a look at the pie chart below, using actual web marketing data.

Search engines contribute almost 70% of your website traffic! So it makes sense to optimize your web site or blogs to get traffic from search engines. The following are the most popular search engines: Google, Yahoo, MSN and Ask.

Another question might be: From which specific search engines should I try to get traffic? Since we need to maximize traffic, it makes sense to get traffic from all search engines. The biggest search engine traffic contributor is Google, which, according to some actual data, receives around 90% of all search engine traffic.

Also, all search engines are similar, and they all love one thing on your website: Original, Quality and Useful Content. This is discussed below.

Second: understand your content

You cannot research keywords properly if you do not understand your content. To be able to understand your content so that it will be loved by search engines, keep in mind the following tips:

* Do not ever copy content from other sources. This will make your blog or website less trusted in the eyes of search engines. If you really need to copy someone else's content, ask permission from the source and include a link to the original page. This ensures the original page will get more credit than yours.

* Write your own copy and always think of helping visitors with your content. Ask this: "How can this content be helpful to my visitors?" For your home page, include your most important services or topics that you are very interested in writing about -- or, in other words "What is my blog all about?"

For the inner pages, write copy on a continual basis (for example, adding two posts per month maybe). This copy should answer visitors' questions, such as "What other interesting things do you have in your blog?" This is where you blog your favorite and specific sub-topics of the home page main topic.

* Do not spam keywords. This is not the time to select keywords, if you are writing your content, do not ever think of putting in too many occurrences of your keywords just to rank in the search engines. Keyword spamming is a big mistake.

Finally, once you have your own content, it is time to structure it to your website for maximum traffic. Below are the quick suggestions:

Main terms: Home page

Secondary terms: Inner pages or categories

Long tail terms: Inner pages or categories

Your home page content is where you will emphasize your main terms. You should not have more than three main terms for the home page. One is ideal. Analyze your home page content and then do a brainstorming session to list the three most relevant main terms. For example, if you have a website that teaches novel writing, a good main term to target is "how to write a novel" (one is enough)

For other pages, apply the same concept. Do not forget the important rules in SEO: include keywords in title tags and in your content. It is hard to rank if you do not have an exact match for "How to write a novel" in your title and in the content.

Third: use Google's AdWords keywords tool

One of the most effective keyword research strategies I discovered is the hitting multiple birds with one stone technique. This can be done by researching just one keyword that could also contain variations of other juicy phrases relating to your content.

Use the Google AdWords keyword tool: https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal

Set it to "All Countries and Territories," type one main term in the box and unchecked "Use synonyms." Also, check " Don't show ideas for new keywords. I only want to see data about the keywords I entered ."

It should look like this screen shot below:

The requirement for this one keyword should be:

  • It should have around 8,000 to 10,000 average monthly search volume in Google (set to all countries and territories). This ensures that the main keyword you are targeting has enough traffic for substantial Google AdSense income.

  • This should be the best keyword among your selected main terms. Use the formula to calculate difficulty.

In relation to this, I have preferred a tool that will automatically select the best keywords to target for Google Ad sense. To use this tool:

  • Download the Excel spreadsheet tool here: http://blog.360.yahoo.com/blog-nNv5JKEydKKD9OmfLBfY?p=4

  • Enter data only in yellow cells. (A maximum of 20 main terms candidates are allowed).

  • Gather Google's monthly average search volume for the keyword: https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal

  • Gather Google's competing web pages data in http://www.google.com/. Look to the upper right of the search results, and find something like this phrase: Results 1 - 10 of about 1,000,000: This means the number of competing web pages is 1,000,000.

  • There is a column in the Excel spreadsheet labeled: "Recommended Keywords in Google AdSense." The results are sorted from the most to least important. It is recommended that you to select only one for your campaign; it will contain other terms also.

Hitting multiple birds with one stone technique. If we target "How to write a novel," we are also targeting the more difficult phrases in the long term such as "write a novel" and "write novel." This means you only need to spot one term that contains more juicy terms for your site in the long run.

Fourth: marketing

You have now selected the best keywords to target for your Google AdSense campaign. Now what? You will have to start marketing your website. To start marketing your website for the best effect, I've provided a quick checklist below:

  • Create accurate and descriptive title tags for your home page/blog front page. These should not be a duplicate of other pages. If you are using blogspot/Google blogger templates, I have written an article to help you create a search engine friendly blog.

  • Promote your website in Digg, Stumble Upon, Delicious, Technorati, Blog catalog and YouTube (there are other good sites, but these are the recommended ones). These are social book marking sites from which you can attract readers of your blog. It will then earn natural back links that will help search rankings.

  • If your blog has enough articles and readership (followers), you can start offering partnerships with related communities. Find out what is lacking in their websites and see if your blog can offer a possible solution. Contact them by commenting in their site or using a form, then ask them to review your site; if they find your blog/site useful, they will link to it.

Here are some other important things to note: if anyone would like to link to your site, always have a link code in your blog so that they can copy and paste it directly to their site such as: How to write a novel. Always use the keywords in the anchor text to help Google associate your site with your main targeted term.

Google Wave API

What is Google Wave?

Google Wave is a product that helps users communicate and collaborate on the web. A "wave" is equal parts conversation and document, where users can almost instantly communicate and work together with richly formatted text, photos, videos, maps, and more. Google Wave is also a platform with a rich set of open APIs that allow developers to embed waves in other web services and to build extensions that work inside waves.

For more information about Google Wave, please visit wave.google.com.

What is the Google Wave API?

The Google Wave API allows developers to use and enhance Google Wave through two primary types of development:

  • Extensions: Build robot extensions to automate common tasks or build gadget extensions to provide a new way for users to interact
  • Embed: Make your site more collaborative by dropping in a Wave

Google Wave is currently available in a developer preview as the APIs and product continue to evolve. Accounts on the developer sandbox will be given out to people intending to build with the Google Wave APIs prior to the public release.

For more information about the capabilities and use cases for each development option, consult the Wave Developer's Guide.

Understanding Google Wave Development – Part 1

Posted on by Spirit of SEO

Since “Google Wave” was introduced at the Google I/O Conference in San Francisco May 27th to 28th, 2009, there has been a lot of buzz and attention surrounding the new platform. What exactly is Google Wave? According to the development team, it is the biggest upgrade to email since the introduction of the web, a type of combination between email, blog, forum comment section, instant message system, and widget board. Google Wave shows the enormous influence that Facebook is having on the future of the web – in a way, the preview looks as if the majority of Google services were integrated and remixed into an animated Facebook stream. The big differences are in the standards behind the interface: XMPP particularly allows the Wave documents to function like an instantaneous, shared whiteboard in addition to a saved multimedia document with filtered permission levels.

What is a wave?

“A wave is equal parts conversation and document. People can communicate and work together with richly formatted text, photos, videos, maps, and more.

A wave is shared. Any participant can reply anywhere in the message, edit the content and add participants at any point in the process. Then playback lets anyone rewind the wave to see who said what and when.

A wave is live. With live transmission as you type, participants on a wave can have faster conversations, see edits and interact with extensions in real-time.”

Developing For Google Wave:

Google plans to open source much of the code behind the Google Wave platform, and one of the points confirmed is that anyone- ISPs, private groups, individuals, companies, websites, domains, will be able to operate their own Wave server based on the Wave Federation Protocols. Developers who would like to build new applications for the Wave platform should review the draft specifications and white papers available at:
http://www.waveprotocol.org/

The Google Wave API is intended to enable developers to embed Wave documents in standard web pages as well as to “extend” the platform by embedding widgets within a Wave itself. The Wave extensions allow for the embedding of virtually the entire archive of iGoogle widgets, and allow programmers to develop Java, Python, ActionScript, and other applications to add new functionality to a Wave. For more information on the Wave API, visit: http://code.google.com/apis/wave/

“On May 28th, the second day of Google I/O, we unveiled Google Wave as a developer preview. But, we’d never actually had non-Google developers use it, and we were eager to see how it’d play out… So, on the Friday after I/O, about 60 developers assembled down at Google HQ for the very first Google Wave API hackathon. After five hours of hacking and ad-hoc discussions with members of the Wave APIs team, there were a whopping 17 demos to show off. We were awed by how enthusiastically developers dove in to the APIs that day, and excited to see what they created. Their accomplishments were especially amazing as no one had even used the product prior to the hackathon.”

Domains and SEO

Domain names play a big role in the search engine optimization game. Many SEOs will not go into a market niche and dish out link investments until they catch a good domain name for the field. In this article I try to answer the question of what is considered a good domain and how domains affect SEO.

Domain Age

Domain age is one of most crucial SEO factors. Since older domains cost a lot more than new ones, search engines take this as a quality cue. If a webmaster purchases an old domain name for several thousand dollars, it's a good indicator that the website will have quality content.

Search engines cannot see for how much one buys a domain, but they can check the date of registration in WHOIS.

When buying a domain name, check its age. Aim for something that is at least one year old, as Google will put more trust on it than a brand new registration.

Another benefit of old domains are old links and existing pagerank. Though links may be irrelevant to your content, they still pass page rank and some authority.

Domain Match

Here is an example of a domain match in a search:

Search

mortgage loan

domain match

mortgageloan.com

I have no affiliation with mortgageloan.com.com.

A domain match can be very powerful. If you have a domain name that matches your keyword, you're 25 percent of the way to top rankings. The reason for this is that search engines classify an exact match to a domain as a navigation query. For instance, if someone searches for "baseball bat" and your domain is baseballbat.com, search engines may classify this query as a navigational one, thus showing you as an authoritative listing.

If an exactly matching domain is in a non-competitive market, sometimes the name is enough to rank on the first page, coupled with a few links and some content. If, on the other hand, you're entering a crowded field, expect to invest much more time and money in content and links. An exact match won't produce magic in competitive market place, but it increases your chances.

The domain matching approach works for .com, .org, .net and other extensions. A domain match is also known to increase search and pay per click CTRs.

Domain Age plus Domain Match

The domain match strategy doesn't work well with new domains. Regardless of keyword proximity, Google doesn't trust new domains, so to really make the domain match strategy work, you need to find an old domain name.

This is the tricky part. Most domain names with an exact match for competitive terms are OLD, expensive and already taken. Those that are for sale, even with .net extensions, go for at least $5,000 - $10,000, so you need to have solid ground for a purchase.

If the site has many links, has a good click through rate and is a decent age, Google may place site links for your keywords and make the listing authoritative. Authoritative listings can account for up to 80 percent of all visitors searching with the term, so the investment is well worth it.

On the contrary, however, an exact match is not necessary to get site links.

Bad Domain Names

Example: get-mortgage-loans-low-interest.com

It's bad because it appears spammy, it's hard to remember and just doesn't sound right. Though I stated above that making your domain exactly match your keywords is a good strategy, it's good only for as long as the domain appears to be memorable. Once it crosses the line into "goofy territory," all of its match leverage is lost.

In general, domains should be easy to remember and have no dashes. They must be easy for someone to type into the address bar (dashes complicate things) and easy to cite on the blog or a page. It should also be easy to convert a domain name into a brand, so the shorter the name the better.

Domains With and Without Dashes

Dashes are evil. Most people won't remember your domain, and those who do will not remember to put dashes.

.COM vs .NET, .ORG and other extensions

The .com extension is synonymous with the Internet and is the BEST one you can use. But .coms also costs much more than their counterparts. For example, site.com will cost at LEAST three times the price of site.net or site.org.

  • Go for .coms when you can. People automatically include .com at the end of each domain name. You may even miss some direct visitors if you park on .net or others, because users may remember the address but assume it's a .com.

  • Stay away from .INFO. Those are hard to remember and create a WEAK impression by default, which is passed on directly to your brand.

  • Local domains like .CA, .CO.UK, .AU and others are as powerful in terms of branding as .COMs. The down side is that they are limited to one country, and it's a lot harder to appear on Google.com. Local country domains are perfect if you're only after your country's market and don't care about global rankings.

  • Nonprofit organizations and charities usually reside on .ORG domains, though it's not a rule. Seomoz.org is has a functional business on .ORG which is by no means a charity.

  • .FM is perfect for radio stations, and was in fact created with radio stations in mind. .TV is perfect for television, but most networks prefer .COM (because it's the default extension in people's minds).

Keywords in a Domain

It's not necessary to have keywords in your domain name. If you have a choice between a keyword-rich new domain and an old domain, go for the old one. Google places more trust in old domains, and it's easier to rank them for any keyword.

Domain Keywords and Link Building

The biggest benefit that keyword-rich domains offer is the anchor text for incoming links.

In many cases, people don't bother putting any anchor text into a link and simply use the site's URL. In that case, keywords in the domain are extremely useful for link building, because the domain name serves as anchor text. For example, if you're after the keyword "engine" and the URL is enginemaster.com, then you benefit from the keyword engine when someone cites your site without wrapping it with anchor text. On the other hand, if you're after "engine" and site address is "horseriding.com," then the benefit of the keyword is lost.

Length of the Domain Name

Just as people don't remember dashed or .info domains, they don't remember long ones. Our society is extremely lazy, so don't expect anyone to memorize anything, especially something long.

Server Location and Extensions

If your server is in Canada and the domain features a .ca extension, you'll have a hard time ranking for US or internal searches. The good side is that you'll be given a boost by Google on Google.ca. This applies to the UK, Australia, Germany and any other country.

It's a good idea to host your site in your country, and register the domain name with an appropriate country extension if you're after local markets.

Branding a Domain Name

Search engine optimization is powerful, but relying entirely on search for visitors is a bad strategy. Many of the most successful small brands get most of their visitors DIRECTLY while still ranking extremely well on search engines. Examples are seochat.com, searchenginewatch.com, seomoz.org, copyblogger.com, grokdotcom.com, searchengineland.com and many more. Ironically, those sites do so well that, if you were to eliminate their search engine rankings they would maintain their mind share and do just fine.

Branding is a topic of its own, too large to cover here; you can learn more by doing your own research. To add to this section, content is one of the best ways to brand a site online, but content has to be in the form of a unique idea or a new approach to things. I cover this concept in detail in my articles on online copy writing.
